Dementia affects the capacity of older individuals to mntn their indepence. provide strategies and tools for promoting indepence among people living with dementia, focusing on various aspects of dly life.

Strategies:

  1. Awareness of Roles: Recognize past roles and current capacities of individuals with dementia. Encourage participation in activities that align with their previous experiences, like social events or caregiving tasks they might have had.

  2. Skill Utilization: Use opportunities to engage participants in familiar tasks they are skilled at. This not only enhances self-esteem but also allows for the retention of learned skills over time.

  3. Learning New Skills: Introduce problem-solving and new skill sessions that are manageable given their current cognitive state. This can be as simple as using technology or organizing household tasks differently.

  4. Involvement in Decision Making: Involve individuals in healthcare decisions and dly life choices to foster a sense of autonomy. Encourage them to make choices whenever possible, despite any limitations.

  5. Assistive Devices: Provide hearing ds, walking frames, and other equipment that can enhance their ability to perform dly activities safely and confidently.
